Impressive numbers

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first seven months of 2021, the country’s export of agricultural, forestry and fishery products (agricultural products) reached US$28.6 billion, up 26.7% over the same period last year. Many industries have had remarkable growth such as the main agricultural products group (vegetables, cassava, pepper, cashew nut, etc.) reaching 12.2 billion USD (up 15%), wood and wood products 10.2 billion USD (up 54%), seafood 4.9 billion USD (up 12%), etc.

Explaining the impressive growth in the context of complicated developments of the Covid-19 epidemic in many countries and regions around the world, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that the shift in the export market has helped Vietnam’s agricultural export value increas sharply. Currently, the US is Vietnam’s largest agricultural product import market with a turnover of up to 8.2 billion USD, accounting for nearly 29% of the market share in the first 7 months of 2021. The next is China, with nearly 5.5 billion USD – 19.2% of the market share) and Japan $1.9 billion (nearly 7% of the market share), etc.

According to Chairman of Binh Duong Wood Association, Dien Quang Hiep, the US is currently the main export market of wood processing enterprises, accounting for more than 65% (up 81% over the same period last year). General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, Dang Phuc Nguyen, said that despite being affected by the Covid-19 epidemic, the export value of vegetables and fruits still increased sharply, reaching more than 2 billion USD, up 17.4% compared to the previous year. With this momentum, this year’s vegetable and fruit export will have a strong recovery, expected to reach from $3.6 billion to $4 billion.

Difficulties and solutions

Despite achieving impressive growth in the first seven months of 2021, Vietnam’s agricultural exports still face many difficulties and challenges. Director of the Department of Agricultural Product Processing and Market Development (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) Nguyen Quoc Toan said that the Covid-19 epidemic will continue to affect trade, transport and goods activities and directly affect the agricultural products producing and processing for export.

According to General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association Dang Phuc Nguyen, the amount of fruit and vegetables meeting the export standards of Vietnam is still low, not meeting the import demand of many major markets in the world.

In order to remove difficulties in production and business, cope with the complicated developments of the Covid-19 epidemic, fulfill the goal of exporting agricultural products to reach 44 billion USD in 2021, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said: the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will closely coordinate with ministries, branches and localities to adjust production plans and seasonal structure in accordance with the weather situation and market demand; minimize damage caused by diseases on crops and livestock, etc., thereby ensuring a stable supply of agricultural products.
